Autonomous AI Can Move Fast. Building Trust Must Move Faster
To take advantage of agentic AI’s unbounded potential, organizations must build protections into both their infrastructure and data.

Businesses and other organizations are lining up to take advantage of agentic artificial intelligence, which leads to two questions.
First, does autonomous AI offer game-changing benefits when it comes to speed, efficiency and productivity? Absolutely.
Second, can organizations trust AI to make important decisions on their own, thereby unlocking game-changing qualities? In a word, no.
At least, not yet.
And there’s the dilemma: IT and business leaders are chomping at the bit to make use of autonomous AI, showing a willingness to invest in it and avidly running use-case pilots to test its viability. But AI’s tendency to introduce errors and propagate them quickly makes turning over the keys to AI agents a bit too hot to touch. The gap between enthusiasm for agentic AI’s extraordinary potential and caution over questions of trust is at the moment the defining challenge of the next generation of AI.
There are, however, steps organizations can take to ensure the safety and reliability of agentic AI. They may require painstaking preparation and careful implementation, but if autonomous AI lives up to its promise, the results will be well worth it.
The Benefits and Risks of Autonomous AI
AI-driven systems are already piloting drones, managing warehouse logistics, monitoring critical infrastructure, defending networks and coordinating supply chains with limited or even minimal human intervention. But as powerful as they are, these systems are essentially doing what they’re told based on their programming and training. The next evolution, agentic AI, goes beyond answering questions, responding to prompts or generating content. Those AIs can make decisions, initiate actions, coordinate with other systems and adapt in real time.
The benefits are obvious. Autonomous systems can move faster than humans, process enormous volumes of information from multiple sources simultaneously, reduce operational costs and improve performance in environments where human involvement is restricted or impossible. In defense and critical infrastructure environments especially, autonomy can dramatically improve responsiveness and resilience. And although they may introduce risks of their own, autonomous AI systems can also help improve cybersecurity by performing detection, response, triage and threat hunting at lightning speeds.
But the risks cannot be ignored. AI systems are known to make mistakes, whether because of hallucinations, biases, inadequate training or other reasons. Those mistakes, such as the creation of vulnerable software made by an AI assistant or factual errors cited by a chatbot, can spread quickly through the ecosystem, sometimes with other AIs repeating initial mistakes. Introducing autonomous AI agents can magnify the problem. As a recent McKinsey analysis on trust in the age of AI agents pointed out, one failure inside an autonomous workflow can propagate downstream and quickly amplify operational damage, especially when organizations lack visibility into how decisions were made. The danger is not simply that AI systems can fail. It’s that they can fail at scale, and organizations may not be able to reconstruct what happened after the failure occurs.
Those risks are giving organizations pause. A study by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services found that although organizations are bullish on agentic AI, with 86% expecting to increase their investments over the next two years, only 6% fully trust AI agents to autonomously manage their core business processes. About half of organizations say they are piloting or exploring use cases, but 9% say they have fully deployed agentic AI. (Apparently, 3% decided to wing it despite questions of trust.)
One reason for this disconnect is that organizations just aren’t ready. Only 20% said their IT infrastructure is ready to support agentic AI for core functions, and only 15% said their data and systems were prepared. A mere 12% said they had risk and governance controls in place.
That is not an AI problem alone. It’s an architecture problem.
Trust Needs a Solid Foundation
Organizations taking an ASAP approach can get caught trying to deploy autonomous AI on top of fragmented legacy environments that were never designed for autonomous decision-making.
That approach can be a minefield. AI systems are only as reliable as the data, infrastructure and operational controls supporting them. If systems cannot share trusted data securely, if workflows lack visibility or if governance policies are inconsistent, autonomous operations become unpredictable.
This is where integration matters. As SD3IT has emphasized in its work with government and commercial customers, AI does not become transformational until it is integrated into existing systems, data environments and operational workflows. The biggest obstacle to scaling AI is often not the AI model itself. It’s the fragmented infrastructure silos beneath it.
Autonomous systems require unified data architectures, secure connectivity and real-time orchestration between applications, platforms and users. Without those foundations, organizations create isolated AI capabilities that cannot operate reliably or securely at scale.
That challenge is particularly significant in government and defense environments, where legacy systems, disconnected data silos and operational security requirements complicate modernization efforts.

Other steps you can take to help ensure secure use of AI include:
Enterprise Orchestration. This is an important emerging concept in autonomous operations. Organizations are recognizing that autonomous AI systems cannot function effectively as isolated tools. They require a governed operational layer capable of coordinating applications, data sources, AI agents and human oversight into a unified workflow. It’s been compared to air traffic control for autonomous systems.
Enterprise orchestration is tied to integration, connecting AI agents to business systems, security policies, operational controls and contextual data. It governs how information flows, how actions are approved, how exceptions are handled and how accountability is maintained. Without orchestration, organizations risk creating autonomous silos that operate independently but without coordination, visibility or governance.
Designing for Trust Before Speed. Trust must be designed into autonomous systems from the beginning. Organizations need clear governance policies defining where autonomous systems can operate independently and where human oversight remains mandatory. High-impact decisions involving safety, security, financial risk or mission-critical operations should retain meaningful human accountability. A good starting point is bounded autonomy, where autonomous systems operate within clearly defined limits, with teams continuously monitoring behavior, validating outputs and expanding authority gradually as reliability improves.
Adhering to Zero Trust Principles. Autonomous systems create new attack surfaces because they connect data pipelines, applications, APIs, operational technology and decision engines. A compromised AI workflow anywhere in the chain can lead to broader disruption. Continuous verification, least-privilege access, strong identity management, encrypted data flows and comprehensive monitoring all become foundational requirements for trustworthy autonomy.
Emphasize Observability. Organizations need the ability to see and track how autonomous decisions are made, what data informed those decisions, what systems were affected and how workflows evolved over time. Without that visibility, organizations cannot investigate failures, prove compliance or improve reliability. If autonomy creates speed without accountability, trust collapses quickly.
Trust Is the Horse, Autonomy Is the Cart
The potential benefits of autonomous AI are enormous, but so are the risks when organizations deploy it faster than they can govern it. Agentic AI will continue advancing because the operational advantages are simply too significant to ignore. The real question is not whether autonomy is coming, but whether organizations are building the infrastructure, visibility and trust required to support it responsibly.
That trust will not come from AI models alone. It will come from secure architectures, unified data environments, strong governance and the ability to observe and control how autonomous systems operate in real time.
Organizations that approach autonomy with discipline and deliberate planning will be well positioned to take advantage of AI’s speed, scale and adaptability without surrendering accountability or operational control. Organizations that pursue autonomy before building the trust required to support it risk creating systems that move faster than they can safely manage.
