No system is an island these days, a fact that will surprise no one managing and securing cloud, edge, operational technology or artificial intelligence systems. Enterprise environments encompass multiple domains, whether they are civilian government agencies, defense components, businesses, industries or critical infrastructure operations.
With so many levels to the technology stack, organizations have never had more advanced tools at their disposal, nor so many double-edged swords to manage. Every further foray into the cloud or to the edge, for example, expands the attack surface. AI accelerates productivity and is becoming essential to security protections such as cyber detection and response. But it has also introduced a slew of potential vulnerabilities to the ecosystem.
And it’s more than just a matter of security. Making the most of an organization’s data and systems involves maintaining visibility and coordination across those environments, a task that is becoming more difficult as the enterprise expands.
Organizations are discovering that deploying more technology, such as another platform or AI model, doesn’t automatically produce better outcomes. Rather, success depends on making all those technologies work together as a secure, coordinated and resilient operational environment. Achieving operational resilience—the goal of every organization—requires integration and orchestration, both of which have become mission-critical capabilities.
The Challenge of Multi-domain Operations
Operational boundaries aren’t what they were a decade or so ago, when you could count on relatively isolated environments where IT departments supported business systems, operational technology solely managed industrial equipment and security teams protected networks by defending the perimeter. Meanwhile, critical data often remained hidden and isolated deep inside departmental silos.
Those boundaries are quickly disappearing. Depending on an organization’s focus, data today can be generated by sensors, unmanned systems, cloud applications, classified and unclassified networks, human users, AI models and edge devices operating thousands of miles apart. Decision-makers, whether involved in a retail business or a military mission, expect all of those systems to share information in real time while maintaining security and compliance.
That level of coordination doesn’t happen by accident. Every disconnected application, incompatible data format or isolated workflow creates another opportunity for delays, security gaps and operational inefficiencies. And bringing AI into an operation, especially agentic AI, only increases the complexity.
To get the most out of their systems, in terms of efficiency and productivity while also ensuring acceptable risk levels, organizations need to integrate and orchestrate their systems.
Enterprise orchestration brings together infrastructure, data, AI and security, each of which requires orchestration efforts of their own, to establish visibility, governance and effective control. Without it, they face potentially serious problems, including:
- Security vulnerabilities resulting from an expanded attack surface rife with blind spots and slower incident response.
- Inefficiencies resulting from fragmented data trapped in silos, which prevent access and use of important information.
- Increased downtime, as a failure in one domain can quickly spread disruptions to other areas.
- Diminished results, as the inefficiencies resulting from a lack orchestration hinders deployment and undercuts results across the board.
How Integration Enables Orchestration
The need for better orchestration often begins with automation because in the current environment organizations often focus first on automation to reap the quick wins it produces. Ideally, they then integrate systems as operations expand. As environments become more complex, orchestration becomes the capability that transforms individual technologies into an operational advantage.
In simple terms, automation performs individual tasks, integration connects systems and orchestration coordinates outcomes. But organizations can’t afford to skip that second step, because without integration, orchestration simply cannot happen.
A good example of the need for orchestration is evident in AI deployments. In a lot of organizations, AI systems are seen as individual tools developed via separate pilots. One team might deploy a chatbot, while another develops predictive analytics and a third experiments with AI agents supporting operational workflows.
Individually, they may produce value, but collectively as part of the enterprise, they can create governance challenges, inconsistent security practices and fragmented decision-making.
Orchestration addresses these challenges, whether concerning AI, data or infrastructure, by coordinating how systems work together to accomplish operational objectives. It determines how information flows, what actions occur next, which AI models should respond, how security policies are enforced and how workflows adapt when conditions change.
The trick is implementing orchestration, and that requires integration. You can’t orchestrate systems in multiple domains if they are not connected and interoperable. Before organizations can coordinate data, AI, infrastructure and operational processes, they must establish secure connections between systems, standardize data, modernize infrastructure and build security directly into the architecture.

These questions increasingly determine whether technology investments produce lasting value. For years, organizations competed by acquiring better technologies. Now they’ll compete based on how effectively those technologies work together.
The organizations that integrate and orchestrate AI, cyber, cloud, edge and operational systems into one resilient mission environment will make faster decisions, adapt more quickly and operate with greater confidence than those still managing disconnected point solutions.
Whether it concerns a military deployment, a business in any field or an industry loaded with operational technology (OT), the competitive advantage won’t belong to the organizations with the most technology. It will belong to the organizations that can best orchestrate it.
